Why The Villain In Dumbo Was A Bigger Shock Than We Expected

Why The Villain In Dumbo Was A Bigger Shock Than We Expected
Michael Keaton as V.A. Vandevere in Dumbo side by side with Walt Disney

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the new live-action Dumbo.

It was clear from the very first trailers that the live-action Dumbo was going to tell a very different story than the original animated classic. Throughout the film's promotion, we were introduced to entirely new characters and settings that showed us the new film would definitely not be a standard remake. The original Dumbo was a movie without a villain, and the new version never entirely tipped its hand in that regard during marketing. It seemed clear that Michael Keaton's character was being set up as the bad guy, but details were left to a minimum. Still, I found myself watching the new film in utter amazement this week when I realized that the villain in Disney's newest movie... is basically an evil Walt Disney.

Michael Keaton plays the role of V.A. Vandevere in the new Dumbo. In the film, as soon as he learns of the existence of the flying elephant, he travels to the Medici Brothers circus in order to obtain the spectacle for his own entertainment venue. However, Vandevere doesn't run a competing circus. Instead, he has build an entertainment mecca, a massive complex where people come from all around to see a variety of different shows and experience unique attractions. It's called Dreamland. He built a theme park.

Micheal Keaton doesn't bear any physical resemblance to Walt Disney in the film; the trademark mustache is missing, but the parallels are clear. The character certainly has other influences as well, like Thomas Edison, who by all accounts actually was an asshole like Vandevere. There's maybe a little J.D. Rockefeller and J.P Morgan there as well, but Walt Disney certainly has a lot in common with this entire class. All are titans in an industry that they've largely created themselves. Of course, Disney is the only one who also built a theme park.

The existence of the park isn't the only connection to Disney. When we first meet Vandevere, he convinces Danny DeVito's Max Medici that the days of the circus are numbered. Now, rather than forcing a show to travel around the country to where the guests were, the way to be successful is to build a permanent entertainment installation and make the guests come to you.

This was basically the entire argument that led to the creation of Disneyland in the first place. Walt wasn't necessarily trying to put the circus out of business, but it's absolutely true that he wasn't a huge fan of the carnivals and circuses that were the popular form of "family" entertainment in the days before his theme park. He found them to be dirty, thought many of the attractions to be cheap and felt they were mostly only fun for kids, leaving their parents to sit around, probably drinking, while the kids went on the rids. He wanted a place where parents and their kids could have fun together.

It seems like Vandevere built his park simply because it's less work to build a fixed location complex then one that travels. The rationale is different, but the result is the same. It's these simple twists that make Michael Keaton's character the "evil" version of the real man.

You simply can't have a villain who owns a theme park and not make people think of Walt Disney. The man and the concept are forever linked together. However, things go so much further than that. Vandevere's Dreamland has attractions that are specifically designed to remind guests of early Disneyland attractions, like the Carousel of Progress and Rocket to the Moon. Dreamland is actively trying to make you think about Disneyland.

This decision, needless to say, is remarkable. Walt Disney is still very much idolized within the company that bears his name. The idea that a villain could be created that would even suggest Walt himself is a thing to behold. Walt Disney's reputation has been an important pillar of the entire company for decades, making the idea that he could inspire a villain seem impossible before now. When Walt Disney was alive he was very careful about the reputation he cultivated. He was very open and honest about this, saying once...

I’ve worked my whole life to create the image of what ‘Walt Disney’ is. It’s not me. I smoke, and I drink, and all the things we don’t want the public to think about. My whole life has been devoted to building up this organization that is represented by the name ‘Walt Disney'

V.A. Vandevere has clearly done this too. When he first arrives at the Medici Brothers circus, everybody is in awe of him. When he shows up in his own theme park, he gets noticed. He clearly has his own public persona.

After Walt's passing, the company that carried on his name continued to build up the image of who Walt Disney was. Even as recently as 2013, when Tom Hanks, the nicest actor who ever lived, played the man himself in Saving Mr. Banks, it was a major breakthrough just to have a shot of Disney holding a lit cigarette. Many old publicity images of the man where he was holding a cigarette would actually airbrush it out of the picture. That film never showed him actually smoking it, of course. That would have been a bridge too far, but that's how carefully the Walt Disney legacy is guarded.

Walt Disney wasn't perfect, he was just a person. However, as has happened with many real people who have obtained such massively popular reputations, there has been a backlash. A lot of the negative things that have been reported about Walt Disney are utterly untrue (that's an entirely separate column), but that hasn't stopped many from viewing the man as exactly the ruthless capitalist monster that Michael Keaton portrays in Dumbo. That's all the more reason that this fictional character in this movie is shocking to see.

V.A. Vadevere is an over-the-top cartoon villain. He intentionally screws Max Medici and everybody in the circus to get what he wants. He orders Dumbo's mother killed to eliminate her as a distraction. He pushes his performers to perform in unsafe circumstances to make the show better. All of this is out of a desire for money.

While V.A. Vandevere may be all about watching his theme park make money, Disney once said of his business of making movies...

We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies.

V.A. Vandevere clearly has far more capitalistic notions than this when it comes to his theme park. He wants Dumbo because Dumbo will bring him money. That money can be used to grow his business. Greed is a fairly common motivation for villains in Disney movies today, so Michael Keaton's character falls right in line with that, but in Walt's day, painting making money as a bad thing was much less prevalent.

This is because Walt Disney himself was an unapologetic capitalist. If there's a difference between Walt Disney and V.A. Vandevere in this regard, it's only by a matter of degree. This is the same Walt Disney who has successfully and permanently linked his name to centuries-old fairy tales. He took public domain concepts that cost him nothing, and created versions that for many are now the standard, making him and his company rich in the process. Maybe Walt saw financial success as a means to an end, rather than an end to itself, as Vandevere seems to, but both of them were certainly focused on making their businesses financially successful.

V.A. Vandevere isn't Walt Disney, but let's not pretend that nobody on the production of the new Dumbo didn't make that connection, just as I, and many others, already have. That's assuming that it wasn't the goal from the outset. They knew the link would be made, and they went ahead with it. I can't decide if this decision is simply insane or the bravest thing that the Walt Disney Company has ever done. This likely won't change many opinions on old Uncle Walt, for good or ill, but it causes me to look at his company in a whole new way.

Richard Madden As The Next James Bond? Rocketman Star On His 'Flattering' Odds

Richard Madden As The Next James Bond? Rocketman Star On His 'Flattering' Odds
Richard Madden

Now that the new Batman has been found in the form of Robert Pattinson (probably), it's time to turn to another pop culture icon with casting rumors: James Bond. Daniel Craig is reprising the role for the final time, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating on who will pay James Bond in the next movie. One of the most popular rumors has been Richard Madden, and while the actor is flattered by the speculation, he denied being up for the part.

Ever since Daniel Craig famously said he'd rather "slit his wrists" than make another James Bond movie after the release of Spectre, rumors have run rampant about who the next Bond could be. Names have included Tom Hiddleston, Tom Hardy, and Idris Elba, but Richard Madden has become a recent favorite for the iconic spy.

Daniel Craig is evidently not slitting his wrists and will play Bond one last time in Bond 25, but after that it's anyone's game. Madden's name is once again popping up as a potential candidate, but the actor is (predictably) denying any intention to play the character.

Richard Madden might be an unfamiliar name to some, but fans will most likely recognize him from his work on Game of Thrones as Robb Stark. The actor also proved his action chops in the acclaimed BBC series Bodyguard, which helped add fuel to the James Bond fire. Madden can be seen in the upcoming Elton John biopic Rocketman, which premiered at Cannes this week to rave reviews.

Richard Madden was at Cannes this week promoting Rocketman, and it didn't take long for someone to ask him a James Bond question. One journalist told him that the odds of him playing James Bond increased 2-1, and the white suit that Madden wore on the red carpet certainly put James Bond in people's minds (via Variety). Here's what Madden said:

It’s very flattering to be involved in that conversation at all, but it’s all just talk, and I’m sure next week it’ll be someone different.

Well, he's not wrong that someone else will inevitably be the next rumor, but it's not like Richard Madden would be able to give any definitive answers if he were up for the part. However, Madden is also up for a lead role in Marvel's Eternals, which would presumably take up most of his time.

Thankfully, his Rocketman co-star Taron Egerton was there to have some fun with the situation. After Richard Madden gave his answer, Egerton starting humming the iconic James Bond theme, which got a good laugh from from Madden.

It's unclear who will play the next James Bond, but lets not put the cart before the horse. We still have to deal with Bond 25, which is slated to release in theaters on April 8, 2020. That's less than a year away, but you can keep yourself occupied with our 2019 movie release guide.

When The Batman Will Start Filming, According To Matt Reeves

When The Batman Will Start Filming, According To Matt Reeves
Batman in Justice League

There is so much we don't know about Matt Reeves' new Batman movie. Most importantly, we don't know who will be playing the role of Batman. However, it looks like we may be getting that answer sometime in the next few months as Reeves has now revealed when he expects his film to actually start filming. In response to a fan on Twitter, Reeves says the film looks to be heading toward cameras sometime around the end of this year.

The Twitter conversation starts with one fan asking if Batman will make an appearance in the Batman movie. It's not that ridiculous a question considering that, at this point, we have no idea who is going to play Batman. Ben Affleck finally made official what many had been suspecting for quite some time, that he won't be returning to play the role in the upcoming movie, or any other DC projects that may have plans for the caped crusader. The man who was once going to write, direct, and star in a solo Batman movie will now do none of those things.

However, that decision isn't slowing things down as Reeves now says his movie is still moving forward. In response to another question, he revealed the timeline for cameras to start rolling...

Looking like sometime around year’s end.

If the new movie starts filming around November or December of 2019, it will have plenty of time to get everything done. The film is currently set with a release date of June 25, 2021, which means it will be about a year and a half between when filming starts and when the movie hits screens.

Of course, Reeves says that it is "looking like" the film may start shooting at the end of the year, which makes it sound like things aren't quite set in stone yet. The biggest question is likely regarding the cast. As far as we know, nobody has been cast for the upcoming film, especially a brand new Batman. If Reeves finds a cast that he wants, but one that isn't able to start shooting on the current schedule, there's always the possibility things could change. Alternatively, things may need to be pushed back if Reeves can't find the cast he wants at all.

On the plus side, the movie does have some time to work with. With the extensive post production that usually goes along with superhero movies, it will take about a year or so to go from the start of filming to a finished product. This means the new Batman could start shooting as late as the summer of 2020 and woulds likely still make the current release date.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about this new Batman movie, but for the first time in a long time, one of them is not, "will this movie actually happen?" It seems quite clear that it will. The rest we'll have to wait to figure out.

Ryan Reynolds Is Bloody In First Hitman's Bodyguard Sequel Image

Ryan Reynolds Is Bloody In First Hitman's Bodyguard Sequel Image

When you take a job as a bodyguard, you go in with the knowledge that things could get messy (just ask Richard Madden’s character in Bodyguard). The messiness of the job though hasn’t stopped Ryan Reynolds’ bodyguard Michael Bryce from returning for the sequel to 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, titled The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Take a look below to see the first image from the set of the sequel film showing a bloody Ryan Reynolds.

Ryan Reynolds must be doing a solid job protecting Samuel L. Jackson’s and Salma Hayek’s Darius and Sonia Kincaid, if he is the only one with blood on him and they’re both pristine and smiling. Watching Deadpool and Nick Fury play off each other in the first film was one of its strengths, and with Salma Hayek’s character set to play a bigger role in the sequel, the three actors look to be having a great time together.

In his Instagram post, Ryan Reynolds says “Two guys, a girl and,” which is a reference to his television series Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place which ran on ABC for four seasons from 1998-2001. Although the gender makeup of the trio echoes that sitcom and there will definitely be some laughs, I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be blood, not pizza sauce.

The end of The Hitman’s Bodyguard saw Michael Bryce rekindle his relationship with his ex-girlfriend and restore his reputation after thwarting Gary Oldman’s dictator. Sonia Kincaid was released from prison and hitman Darius escaped prison to be with her. The sequel film will reunite this unlikely trio for a new adventure set on the Amalfi coast where they will have to be the good guys in order to save Europe from a dangerous zealot.

Joining Ryan Reynolds, Salma Hayek and Samuel L. Jackson in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a star-studded group of faces both new and returning. Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant reprises his role as Seifert and he stars alongside Frank Grillo, Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman. That last name is especially exciting because despite the literally hundreds of credits between them, this comedy action-thriller will be the first time that Samuel L. Jackson and Morgan Freeman have starred in a feature film together.

Patrick Hughes returns to the director’s chair for the Lionsgate and Millennium Media title. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is now filming and has yet to set an official release date. The Hitman’s Bodyguard debuted in August of 2017 and enjoyed three weekends atop the domestic box office, finishing its run with $176.6 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million.

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. If you haven't seen it yet, check out one of our other stories!

It's been nearly a week since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and moviegoers are still recovering from the movie's unpredictable events. The Russo Brothers crafted a complicated story that was truly the cumulation of the last 21 movies, rewarding the hardcore fandom for consistently running to theaters and shelling out cash for each new release.

The Russo Brothers threw everything and the kitchen sink into Avengers: Endgame, so there's plenty to unpack from the action-packed blockbuster. While moviegoers' heads are understandably still spinning, that's a feeling that extends to even the cast and crew. Guardians of the Galaxy standout Dave Bautista took to social media following Endgame's release, check it out:

Same, Dave. Same.

Dave Bautista's Tweet makes a great deal of sense, especially considering he was probably kept in the dark regarding quite a bit of Avengers: Endgame's contents. Drax was largely absent from the blockbuster, after he and most of the Guardians faded to dust as a result of Thanos' finger snap of death. So while he was privy for the final battle and the Guardians' ultimate fate, Bautista was likely just as delighted and surprised over Endgame's contents as the rest of us.

The Guardians of the Galaxy were hit hard by Thanos' assault in Infinity War, with only Rocket and Nebula managing to survive the snap. Luckily, the dusted Guardians popped back up in Endgame's final battle with Thanos. After Hulk managed to snap everyone back into existence, all of the galaxy's forces untied against Thanos and his army. Drax and Mantis were one of the first Guardians to appear, and they were a sight for sore eyes.

The Russo Brothers crammed so much into Avengers: Endgame, that the blockbuster is basically begging or a rewatch. This might be exactly what Dave Bautista needs, as he's processing the events of the movie as well. And in the end, Endgame did seem to tease the future of his team of intergalactic heroes.

Once reassembled, the Guardians of the Galaxy ended up heading back to space in Endgame, with Thor in toe. Star-Lord is shown searching for the 2014 version of Gamora, who joined the final battle against Thanos before vanishing. The search for Gamora will likely be a major plot point for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it should be interesting to see if Thor ends up actually joining the team. It's a character pairing that worked great in Infinity War, but Chris Hemsworth has also come to the end of his Marvel Studios contract.

Avengers: Endgame is currently in theaters now, and Guardians 3 is rumored to begin filming in 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Stan Lee’s Avengers: Endgame Cameo Will Be His Last

Stan Lee’s Avengers: Endgame Cameo Will Be His Last
Stan Lee in Ant-Man

When you go see a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe there are a few things you can count on. You know you'll see classic superheroes and great action. You know it will be full of easter eggs and reference to other Marvel movies. You also know that you'll see Stan Lee, a man responsible for so many of those Marvel heroes, appear on screen at some point. However, it's now been confirmed that when Lee makes an appearance in Avengers: Endgame in a couple weeks, it will be his last appearance in the MCU.

Stan Lee died at the end of 2018 and so it was always known that the cameos would be coming to an end. What wasn't clear, however, was exactly which movies Lee had done filming for and which he had not. He was confirmed to appear in both Captain Marvel and Endgame, but we didn't know for sure if Lee had ever filmed a scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home, now Endgame director Joe Russo has confirmed that Lee's final bow will be in the massive Avengers film, saying...

It’s his last one committed to film.

Of course, Joe Russo's comments to Mashable are likely specifically designed to leave the door open for other ways for Stan Lee to "appear" in future films. We could still see easter eggs that reference Lee in future Marvel films. Just because the man himself cannot film new material, doesn't mean the MCU is going to forget Stan Lee.

Honestly, it feels somewhat fitting that Stan Lee's final appearance will be in Avengers: Endgame. The movie is likely to be the end of a lot of things in the MCU. We expect characters to leave the story already, so Lee ending his cameo run here makes sense. Clearly, nobody knew he wouldn't be able to film any more scenes when his Endgame cameo was filmed, but if there were ever plans to wrap up the streak of appearances, Endgame certainly would have been the place to do it.

Captain Marvel, the first MCU movie to hit theaters after Lee's death, included a great tribute to the man, replacing every image in the Marvel Studios graphic with a different Lee cameo. It also had one of his funniest cameo moments of the entire run, with a hilarious reference to Kevin Smith's 90s comedy Mallrats, in which Lee also appeared. It will be a tall order for Endgame to out do Captain Marvel, but you can't help but think that for a movie as big as Endgame, even Stan Lee's cameo was designed to be something epic.

We're expecting to say goodbye to some of our favorite characters by the time Avengers: Endgame is over. It seems w'll also be saying goodbye to Stan Lee. If you were planning to bring tissues, maybe pack a couple extra.

Sounds Like Marvel Studios Is Really Focusing On Diversity In Phase Four

Sounds Like Marvel Studios Is Really Focusing On Diversity In Phase Four
Captain Marvel leads the rest of her Star Force members into battle

A lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fate in Phase 4 is unknown, past the fact that it will kick things off with Spider-Man: Far From Home. But there’s definitely some idea of what properties will make an appearance in the next stage of the evolution for the MCU, as confirmed by Avengers: Endgame producer Trinh Tran. While she was obviously vague about the specifics, the subject of diversity is the big focus for the next batch of films. In particular, Tran dropped the following hints:

All I can say is we have a ton of characters we haven’t explored, and I’d love to do them all. Especially given that with Captain Marvel’s success and the diversity that she brings with the female representation, and with Black Panther and that diversity, it would be great to get more of that out there. Because we have a lot of diverse characters in Marvel.

With both Captain Marvel and Black Panther raking in upwards of $1 billion in their theatrical releases, Marvel Studios has the track record to prove that audiences are definitely looking for better, more diverse representation at the multiplex. But on top of that marketable truth, the studio also has the properties to back up the current plans that Trinh Tran is hinting towards in Phase 4.

Obviously, sequels that follow both Carol Danvers and King T’Challa are going to be hot topics of discussion throughout the offices of Marvel Studios. That’s just for starters though, as the studio has also made announcements on other titles and casting that make for a more diverse MCU. One such title on the plate of the Marvel Studios creative team is the feature film adaptation of Shang-Chi, with Short Term 12 director Daniel Cretton directing, and the need for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Asian-American lead to be cast.

Additionally, the Scarlet Johansson-led Black Widow solo film is gathering steam pretty fast, with a cast that seems to be constantly growing in recent weeks. That makes this particular project feel like more of a pressing matter for the near future, as all that needs to happen is for the project’s cast to fill out and a start date to be set. And that last concern seems to already be solved, as David Harbour has clued the world into a possible June start date.

Then there’s The Eternals, which is set to have Chloe Zhao directing a cast that will include not only Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani in its lineup, but also has a role open for an openly gay actor on this new Marvel cinematic super team. While most of these other projects weren’t mentioned by producer Trinh Tran during her talk with Screen Rant, they aren’t exactly surprises as they’ve been going concerns that for some time.

It shouldn’t be too long before Marvel Studios announces their official plans for Phase 4 and possibly beyond if the claim of a five year plan already drawn up is accurate. As it stands, we do know that Avengers: Endgame marks the beginning of the end, which will lead to a brand new beginning, on April 26.

All The Star Wars Movies Will Be Made Available On Disney+

All The Star Wars Movies Will Be Made Available On Disney+
Han Solo and Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Ever since the Lucasfilm purchase was finalized in 2012, the Star Wars franchise has been part of the Disney empire… I mean, family, with The Force Awakens being the first movie to kick off this new era. So when it was announced that Disney was launching its own streaming service, Disney+, it was expected that Star Wars would feature prominently. Now it’s been officially announced that along with all the original Star Wars programming already announced, all of the Star Wars movies will be made available on Disney+, including the pre-Disney ones.

In case you’re wondering why this is surprising, it’s because last summer, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that pre-2019 Star Wars movies would not be available on Disney+ at the beginning due to licensing rights. It was also reported around the same time that Turner Broadcasting System owning the TV rights to most of the Star Wars movies prevented Disney from folding them into Disney+, and since this deal didn’t expire until 2024, the Mouse House was working to buy those rights back.

Evidently the company succeeded, because all the Star Wars movies will be viewing options on Disney+. However, don’t expect all of them to be available right at launch. The first two Star Wars trilogies, The Force Awakens and Rogue One will be there on Day 1, with The Last Jedi, Solo and Episode IX coming within the first year.

Episode IX not being available at the get-go makes sense, as Disney+ will be launching before the movie even hits theaters. As for The Last Jedi and Solo, I suspect the delay getting them to Disney+ involves Disney letting its old deal with Netflix run out. Once that happens, it’s only a matter of time before these are added to the streaming service’s catalog.

Star Wars was always going to be one of the main Disney+ draws, so for those of you who had been hoping that you’d be able to watch all the movies set in a galaxy far, far away on the service, your wish has been granted. It’s also logical to assume that more upcoming Star Wars movies, like the Rian Johnson trilogy and the film series being worked on by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, will be thrown onto Disney+ after their theatrical runs have ended.

Of course, these movies are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Disney+ Star Wars content. So far two live action original shows have been announced: The Mandalorian, which is set in the decades between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens and will be available on Day 1, and the officially-untitled Cassian Andor and K-2SO series, which sees Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk reprising their respective Rogue One roles.

On the animation side of things, along with housing the previous seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Disney+ will also debut the show’s seventh season, which will be comprised of 12 episodes. One would imagine that Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Resistance will also be thrown onto the service eventually, but so far there’s no official word on those two shows.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on the Star Wars franchise, which continues with the release of Episode IX on December 20. In the meantime, browse through our 2019 release schedule to learn what other movies are opening later this year.

Solo 2: Writer 'Grateful And Galvanized' By Viral Campaign For Star Wars Sequel

Solo 2: Writer 'Grateful And Galvanized' By Viral Campaign For Star Wars Sequel
Solo: A Star Wars Story Han and Chewie Alden Ehrenreich Lucasfilm

The first Star Wars movie opened 42 years ago today on May 25, 1977. That's when we first met Han Solo, as played by Harrison Ford. Over 40 years later, we finally got Han's backstory in Solo: A Star Wars Story, with the young scoundrel played by Alden Ehrenreich. Solo ended up a Star Wars scapegoat, since the box office wasn't quite what was expected for a franchise movie. Reviews were mixed, but the fans who loved it are staunch defenders for it. Those fans recently launched a campaign to continue the story, getting #MakeSolo2Happen trending. Solo director Ron Howard had a simple reaction, but co-screenwriter Jon Kasdan had more expansive thoughts:

Yeah, Solo was set several years before the first Star Wars movie and ended with potential for how to continue Han's story until reaching the point of Episode IV - A New Hope. Solo 2 could've filled that timeline easily -- and maybe still could?

Jonathan Kasdan worked on the Solo script that his father, longtime Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan, had started before joining the The Force Awakens writing team. Solo infamously hit a rough patch when initial directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the film. One of the rumored issues behind-the-scenes was the directors encouraging a lot of improvisation away from the script. Ron Howard took over as director for the rest of filming, and reshoots.

The resulting film has a 70% fresh rating from 442 critics and a 64% audience score from nearly 41,000 RT users. Solo also has an A- CinemaScore from polled moviegoers, which is slightly down from the A that Rogue One, The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi all received. But the A- ties all three prequels, and it's still better than the B- that The Clone Wars got in 2008, marking the lowest Star Wars CinemaScore.

Solo wasn't everyone's cup of blue milk, but it's clear the film still has a lot of fans out there, and they have "galvanized" Jon Kasdan. Maybe he's gearing up to make a new argument to Lucasfilm to give Solo 2 a chance -- either in theaters or (more likely?) on the new Disney+ streamer launching in November. Never tell him the odds!

Meanwhile, there's disagreement in the rest of the galaxy when it comes to the Star Wars movies that will hit the big screen. There's a petition against the Star Wars movie being made by the Game of Thrones showrunners, and some fans aren't excited about The Rise of Skywalker after The Last Jedi. But on the flip side, some fans are thrilled about the new Star Wars movies coming, especially The Rise of Skywalker as it ends the nine-film Skywalker Saga. Keep up with everything heading to theaters this year with our 2019 movie schedule.

These Marvel Heroes Should Be The Next Avengers Team

These Marvel Heroes Should Be The Next Avengers Team
Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers follow for Avengers: Endgame**. You don't want to know any of this stuff until you've seen the movie.**

So, you’ve seen Avengers: Endgame. You laughed, cried, cheered and cried a lot more, and now we’re all left to process that huge movie. Even though Endgame has only just arrived in theaters and there’s still so much to talk about, this is the MCU, and we can’t help but think about the future. Endgame was the definitive end for a handful of key characters, but several more lived on to fight another day.

The old Avengers guard has moved on and there is a new generation of heroes ready to step into the spotlight. Obviously, this is all going to be entirely speculative on my part, but there are plenty of big-time players on the board, and the new Avengers roster could look mighty impressive.

I’m operating off the basis that no surviving original Avenger is up for grabs. Hawkeye is with his family, Thor is in space, and Hulk... well, Hulk is up in the air, but let’s get some new blood and regulate him to a cameo or resident science guy. I have a personal preference for smaller teams, but there were too many characters for me to cut. These are the Marvel characters who should join the new Avengers team in Phase 4.

Spider-Man

Unless Sony decides to throw the rug out from under Marvel’s feet, there’s little chance Spider-Man isn’t on the Avengers. In addition to being Marvel’s flagship character, he’s appeared in three crossover films so far, and he’s technically one of the only active members of the Avengers still standing.

Not only does Spider-Man bring some levity to the team, but his young age also positions him for leadership roles down the line. Spidey can be groomed into being a major character in the MCU’s future, and he has plenty of mentors to help him in Tony Stark's absence.

Captain Marvel

Kevin Feige said that Carol Danvers will be taking a leadership role within the MCU moving forward. There are big plans for her in the future, so it’s a good thing that she has a billion-dollar franchise right out of the gate.

As the most powerful hero in the MCU, Carol is beyond valuable as an asset to the Avengers. The future threats of Phase 4 are unknown, but the Avengers will probably need all the photon-powered muscles they can get. I got the sense in Endgame that Carol wasn’t used to operating in a team, so that could make for an interesting arc down the road.

Black Panther

Speaking of billion-dollar heroes, the future is bright for Black Panther. His standalone film stabbed straight through the heart of pop culture last year and propelled itself to a Best Picture nomination. That's no small feat for a superhero movie, but Black Panther was clearly something special to a lot of people.

Beyond the achievements of his film, Black Panther is a good guy to have around. He's an extremely resourceful character with almost the same powers as Captain America, and his access to vibranium offers all sorts of cool tech options for the Avengers. Plus, he's vastly wealthy and the Avengers need someone to fund them with Tony Stark gone.

Doctor Strange

Pretty much the entirety of Endgame was by Doctor Strange’s design. He was the mastermind behind the Avengers final stand and made sure that everything came together as he had foreseen. He’s too powerful and smart a player to leave off of the board.

A Doctor Strange sequel is reportedly in development, so we can likely count on Strange to show up in the future. Strange is responsible for protecting the entire multiverse, so he might not feel the need to deal with the Earth-bound conflicts of the Avengers, but that depends on what type of threats are in Phase 4.

Ant-Man And The Wasp

These two are a packaged deal. I very much doubt that we’d get one without the other. Ant-Man got a big chance to step up in Endgame, and the Wasp was in the thick of it during the Battle of Earth, so it only makes sense that they would both get called up to the big leagues.

Honestly, I could see both characters sitting out the next team-up since these two tend to deal with much (no pun intended) smaller stakes, but they’ve both been in the MCU longer than most of these other picks. It seems only fair that they get their shot in the team-up movie.

Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff is one of the only characters on this list who actually is an official Avenger, but she’s never really gotten her time to shine except in small doses. With the bigger players gone, now might be the perfect time for Wanda to step up as a key member of the Avengers.

The death of Vision leaves plenty of room for emotional drama, and comic book readers know that when Scarlet Witch gets emotional, things get crazy. Plus, she’s stupid strong and almost killed Thanos BY HERSELF, so the MCU can’t be done with her yet. Some of this might depend on how WandaVision shakes out.

Valkyrie

Valkyrie is one of the newest characters in the MCU, but she quickly became a fan-favorite after her debut in Thor: Ragnarok. She oozes charisma, in no small part thanks to the performance of Tessa Thompson.

Valkyrie would be the Asgard representative of the new team. She's the newly appointed queen of Asgard and while her kingdom doesn't exactly rival Wakanda at the moment, she's in too important a position to leave her offscreen for too long. With the Thor franchise up in the air, the Avengers would make a great place to showcase Valkyrie and her awesome flying horse. We need more pegasus in the MCU!

Sam Wilson As Captain America

One of the most significant changes made in Endgame is the retirement of Steve Rogers after he returns to the timeline as an old man. Now too old to be Captain America, he passes his iconic shield to his best friend Sam Wilson, naming him the new Captain America.

It's a huge step up for Sam and it's sure to have big implications moving forward. If Sam becomes Captain America, then he will almost certainly be on the next Avengers team. Being in such a leadership role is all-new for Sam, so it would be super interesting to see how he interacts with personalities like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, and coming to terms with his new place in the MCU.

Again, this is a pretty large team, and while Marvel tends to go bigger with each sequel, I have a feeling that it will narrow its scope for a bit. Coming off of the massive Infinity Saga, it would make sense that Marvel takes a patient approach and builds up its new team of characters just like it did with the original Avengers. However, if it wants to go big for Phase 4, you can't get much better than the assembled team up above.

What Will Happen To Disney's X-Men Franchise After Dark Phoenix

What Will Happen To Disney's X-Men Franchise After Dark Phoenix
Sophie Turner as Jean Grey in new X-Men Dark Phoenix

With Disney's acquisition of Fox officially completed in late March, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be the first official X-Men film to premiere under the Marvel and Disney umbrella. From there, fans have been given a bit of information on what's next for the X-Men, but only in the form of release dates for films. As many may know, however, dates can always change and movies can be cancelled, so what will happen to the X-Men following Dark Phoenix?

We do have some answers, and some healthy speculation that explores how Disney and Marvel may incorporate the Mutants into its Phase 4 plans. We also have a history of the franchise from the time it left Marvel to its return, which provides context and explains why the answers behind the future of the X-Men franchise aren't easy to assume.

The X-Men Franchise Under Fox

The year was 1993, and Marvel was far from the financial powerhouse it is today. As a way to stay afloat and get some cash, the comic company sold the movie rights of its heroes to film studios, such as Spider-Man to Sony, and of course, the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise to 20th Century Fox. The decision was based, in part, due to the studio's success with X-Men: The Animated Series, which premiered in 1992.

The first Fox X-Men movie wouldn't hit theaters until 2000, and would prove to be a massive hit, making $296 million at the box office on a $75 million budget. There would be two financially successful direct sequels, both of which would more heavily revolve around the star of its spinoff films Hugh Jackman. Folks loved Wolverine, and still do to the point fans hoped he'd reprise his role when the Disney and Fox deal went through.

Wolverine would continue to be the Marvel franchise's sole spinoff character until 2011, when X-Men: First Class introduced another commercially successful spinoff to the mix. In 2014, Deadpool was introduced, and fundamentally changed Hollywood's perception on the commercial viability of R-rated features for superheroes.

While Fox's X-Men movies were commercially successful, there was little consistency in the acclaim between X-Men films. Additionally, the franchise's timeline was a bit of a mess, despite the best efforts by X-Men: Days of Future Past to marry the worlds of the original cast and the First Class cast. It apparently wasn't a big deal for Fox for it all to make sense at the time, although it is a factor that may come into play later.

The X-Men Franchise Under Disney

While Fox was making oodles of X-Men movies off of Marvel's characters, the original company had finally found some ground in the film world via Iron Man. Marvel's success caught the attention of Hollywood, including Disney, who successfully acquired Marvel Studios a little over a year after Iron Man's release date. With the massive purchasing power of Disney behind it, Marvel was in a great position to purchase back the rights for some of its characters.

Disney got to work and successfully navigated deals with Sony to get Marvel Studios involved in Spider-Man, and also has a right of first refusal with Universal should the studio ever want to collaborate on another Hulk film. To say Disney was explicitly interested in purchasing Fox for the X-Men isn't entirely true, as the Avatar franchise and television franchises (including sports) under the umbrella will give plenty of value as well.

There was a slight competition between Disney and Comcast for Fox, but the House of Mouse won out in the end and got the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchise back for Marvel. The two movies Fox had in-development, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, had both been postponed prior to the acquisition.

Now, Dark Phoenix is slated to be released on June 9, but New Mutants has been pushed back to a release in April of 2020. Additionally, Fox's long in-development spinoff that highlights the mutant Gambit has officially been shelved. The movie had yet to get some serious traction for quite some time, and had various issues since the idea was first proposed over a decade ago. In short, Disney's decision to effectively kill the movie isn't all that surprising.

The Future Of X-Men

After X-Men: Dark Phoenix premieres, there's a question of what will happen to the rest of the Marvel franchise. There's been curiosity as to whether Marvel Studios will incorporate the existing cast into the MCU, and some or all of the heroes will make an appearance in Phase Four. It's certainly a possibility, although some skeptics believe that Marvel might opt for a full-scale reboot due to the inconsistent timeline of the franchise potentially tainting its carefully crafted universe.

The release of Avengers: Endgame and recent revelations from Spider-Man: Far From Home somewhat deepen the mystery, as there's a potential way for the X-Men franchise to exist within the MCU in the form of a separate multiverse. This would mean that the X-Men are in a parallel universe from the rest of the MCU, which would prevent any of its events or confusing timelines from invading on the rest of the MCU.

The good news, is that if Phase Four includes the multiverse, it's already been heavily implied that characters can travel between them. This, of course, means the X-Men could theoretically one day fight alongside (or against) the Avengers, and that War Machine could appear alongside Deadpool like Don Cheadle has been hoping for. Provided this is what Marvel has planned, it's the perfect situation where Disney can have the cake, and eat it too.

Again, though, nothing is certain and Disney and Marvel could also just keep the X-Men separate from the rest of the MCU, or do a reboot of the franchise entirely sometime after X-Men: Dark Phoenix or New Mutants. It could also establish an entirely new set of Mutants exclusive to the MCU, considering Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver were technically mutants. These days, nothing seems entirely off the table with Disney and Marvel.

As mentioned, Marvel and Disney are set to release X-Men: Dark Phoenix in theaters Friday, June 7. CinemaBlend will report on the X-Men's future with Marvel as more updates become available, so continue to read our content for the latest and greatest news in movies, television, and pop culture.

Stephen King's Reaction To Seeing It: Chapter 2

Stephen King's Reaction To Seeing It: Chapter 2
The Losers Club from IT

The work of Stephen King is as popular now for cinematic adaptation as it has ever been. However, without question, the best of the recent films based on his work was IT. Now the movie that will complete the story, It Chapter 2 is set to arrive later this year. However, King himself has apparently already seen the film, and he's getting fans hyped by telling them it's terrific. King recently tweeted...

Looking forward to IT Chapter 2? You should be. I've seen it, and it's terrific. The trailer is coming Thursday, at noon. You'll float.

This will almost certainly get fans excited, for the trailer if nothing else.King says the trailer is set to drop at noon. As he's based in Maine we can assume that's noon eastern time.

The fact is that we fully expect Stephen King to only have good things to say about It: Chapter 2. If something went completely haywire and he hated the movie he would likely stay quiet.

Of course, at the same time, King also had pretty complementary things to say about The Dark Tower before it came out, and that it didn't turn out nearly as well. He also went absolutely crazy over how good he thought the recent remake of Pet Sematary was and a lot of people wouldn't agree with him on that one either.

Of course, it seems highly unlikely that the same thing will happen here. The same team behind the camera that brought us the first chapter of IT is also making the new installment. That movie was a smash hit that brought in $700 million globally and became the highest grossing R-rated horror movie ever made.

From what some of us at CinemaBlend have already seen, it looks like the sequel is exactly what fans of the original are looking for.

The first part of IT followed half of Stephen King's novel, which followed a group of young kids as they dealt with a supernatural evil that took the form of a clown. The sequel will follow the same group after they've entered adulthood, though we know the younger versions of the characters will also appear in the new film.

While the novel jumps back in forth between time periods, the movie took the approach of splitting the story in two and telling the tale chronologically. It made the first movie a complete story that didn;t even necessarily need the follow up if the first movie wasn't a hit, but of course, it was.

James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader are among those joining the film as the grown up versions of the Loser's Club.

While we can't necessarily take Stephen King at his word, we'll be able to judge for ourselves if It: Chapter 2 looks great when the new trailer hits in a couple of days. The movie hits theaters in September.

The Battle For SPECTRE - The Rights War That Complicated James Bond For Decades

The Battle For SPECTRE - The Rights War That Complicated James Bond For Decades
Spectre glass cracked into the octopus symbol

Time and time again, we’ve seen issues surrounding intellectual property rights complicate everything from a film’s production to its theatrical release. But some cases are so complicated that they don’t simply go away after the cameras are packed and the posters are removed. And in the case of most other areas of his expertise, nobody does complicated rights better than James Bond.

What started as an idea for a film became a flashpoint of massive legal proportions that, until recently, left the 007 franchise without the usage of one of its most iconic bodies of villainy for quite some time. With the resolution of this conflict still pretty fresh in recent history, and Bond 25 currently in production, the battle for SPECTRE’s very place in the series’ canon is a vital piece of history to revisit.

What Is SPECTRE?

In the history of the film adaptations to Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, the most formidable threat to the world was the SPecial Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion. Known as SPECTRE for short, it was the one stop shop for villainous personalities like Dr. Joseph No, Auric Goldfinger, and most notably Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the leader and “Number One” in charge of SPECTRE’s operations.

SPECTRE and its personnel were used in the films intermittently, starting with 1962’s series starter Dr. No, with 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever marking the supposed end of the organization and the one true death of Ernst Stavro Blofeld. It wasn’t until 2015’s Spectre that the James Bond series would reintroduce both that character (through the casting of Christoph Waltz), as the rights issues surrounding the creation and implementation the man and his legacy were subject to legal challenges that weren’t easily circumvented.

The Movie That (Almost) Started It All

When author Ian Fleming looked towards turning his literary franchise into a box office hit, Thunderball was originally considered to be the first film to do so. The eighth novel in his series, his 1961 book was a creation that drew on a rather controversial source: an original screenplay that was written between himself and screenwriters Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham in the late 1950s. While Fleming eventually decided to distance himself from the writing process, McClory and Whittingham would finish the screenplay, which eventually got its title from Ian Fleming himself.

After reading the finished novel before publication, McClory felt that Ian Fleming had plagiarized the screenplay of Thunderball for his novel. Even with some differences separating the two projects, one such difference being the alleged creation of SPECTRE to stand as the villains, Kevin McClory tried to stop the book from being published. While that tactic failed, McClory eventually pursued further legal action that granted him the literary and film rights to Thunderball, leaving Ian Fleming with the rights to the novel he wrote from its screenplay.

The End Of SPECTRE

With Kevin McClory owning the rights to Thunderball, this kind of threw the question of who created SPECTRE into the air, with McClory and Ian Fleming being the two parties the issue landed in-between. In the end, while the matter wasn’t officially resolved, Ernst Stavro Blofeld would make his final appearance in Diamonds Are Forever, with SPECTRE not even being named in the film at all. While there were intentions to use Blofeld and his criminal enterprise in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, McClory was ready with another injunction to prevent this from happening.

Instead of fighting another court battle to continue, the film was altered to omit the organization and its leader, opting instead for an original character, shipping magnate Karl Stromberg, as its villain. Though turnabout was fair play at that same point in Bond history, as Kevin McClory and Sean Connery had worked on a story entitled Warhead, which would be the first of several attempts to revive Thunderball in his own image. With the rights firmly in his hands, it was only a matter of time before he tried again.

The Remakes That Stoked The Fires

Sure enough, Kevin McClory would go on to two more attempts at remaking Thunderball in his own way image. The first was 1983’s Never Say Never Again, in which James Bond and Ernst Stavro Blofeld fought for custody of two nuclear warheads yet again. And oddly enough, Sean Connery was convinced to play the character of 007 yet again, after famously saying he’d never return after Diamonds Are Forever. With this film being released in the same year as the official Bond series’ Octopussy, there was obviously a competition between the two films. Ian Fleming’s estate attempted to prevent such a race, but lost their bid to stop the film’s release. In the end, the two films only saw a $27.5 million difference in their grosses, with Roger Moore’s official James Bond movie winning out.

The second, and final, time that Kevin McClory would try to remake his intellectual property was with the film known as Warhead 2000 A.D. With Sony spurring him on in hopes it could create further competition with its own James Bond franchise. But, much as McClory prevented MGM from using SPECTRE and Blofeld for The Spy Who Loved Me, the studio was able to successfully prevent Kevin McClory from achieving his goal, through a deal with Sony. If the film had progressed, there would have been a chance that either Timothy Dalton or Liam Neeson would have played the role of Bond. But alas, it was never meant to be.

Reuniting Bond and SPECTRE

It seemed that the true James Bond series would never see SPECTRE again in its lifetime. Even Albert Broccoli and EON Productions, the parties that practically ran the show with MGM, thought it to be so. Nowhere was that clearer than in the bold statement they made in the prologue to For Your Eyes Only. With a huge action sequence that saw Bond tormented by and dispatching of a bald man sitting in a wheelchair with a white cat in a smokestack, the message was clear: that contractually complex character is dead, and they didn’t need him anymore.

While the series would eventually move on for decades without official use of SPECTRE or its main villain, circumstances eventually saw those rights landing with MGM and EON Productions once more. After Kevin McClory passed away in 2006, his family would move on to the point where they sold the rights to the intellectual property he held onto through the rest of his life back to the studio. So it came to pass that in 2013, SPECTRE became a part of the official 007 playground once again, just in time to tie the organization in with its modern counterpart, Quantum, in the 2015 film named for this shadowy group of newly restored evil.

At this point, the only way that Ernst Stavro Blofeld won’t return would be due to Christoph Waltz not wanting to portray the character again. Though if the history of Blofeld has taught us anything, it’s that he can always be rewritten for a new actor through cosmetic surgery. It’s worked for him in the past, though if the casting of Rami Malek goes through, it seems unlikely that this route is going to be taken. But at the very least, SPECTRE will be around for any future villain to take their place in, ready to use its apparatus to make James Bond’s life a living hell.

James Bond will return in Bond 25, when it hits theaters on April 8, 2020.

How Robert Downey Jr. Felt Watching Spider-Man's Death In Infinity War

How Robert Downey Jr. Felt Watching Spider-Man's Death In Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War Spider-Man fading into dust in front of Tony Stark

If you’re not a hunk of weeping personhood the moment Peter Parker collapses into Tony Stark’s arms, pleading for his own life in the face of Avengers: Infinity War’s Decimation, you just might be a stone cold professional. The moment is one of the most emotionally taxing events in that film’s mass casualty finale and, for some, it’s still pretty upsetting. Of course, for Robert Downey Jr., being one of those lovable stone cold professionals, it’s a scene that didn’t really hit him until he sat down to watch it play out himself.

Robert Downey Jr.’s story of how Spider-Man’s death in Avengers: Infinity War finally hit him, and why it’s so effective in general, is as follows:

It was crazy to shoot it, but it was just another day, and then we were at lunch and doing stuff, because it’s a movie. But then I think seeing it -- and I happened to see it with this amazing Scottish kid who couldn't go to a theater -- so I saw it with him, and his reaction really effed me up. So I think what a lot of us are looking forward to is, like Kevin [Feige] always says, it's that surprise and delight experience with Endgame. It's one of those things where you go, 'Wow, I think we just made a pretty serious choice.’ But I think audiences like that. I think audiences are so smart and now so... they require to not be fed the same drivel as even twenty minutes ago. We need novelty and I think what the Russos and Kevin have been able to do is provide that in spades.

CinemaBlend was on hand to hear this story at the Avengers: Endgame press conference, as our own Eric Eisenberg was in attendance. And what Robert Downey Jr. said doesn’t sound all that weird -- as in the moment of filming Avengers: Infinity War’s big emotional moment, it’s still kind of easy to get wrapped up in the fact that there’s several takes to be filmed, so it’s easier to come back from that emotional investment.

Of course, with an audience that doesn’t know what’s coming, as well as within the confines of the narrative that Avengers: Infinity War put forth, it’s a completely different context. Despite the fact that pretty much everyone that’s picked up a comic book knows that Spider-Man won’t be dead for long, seeing Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. really sell the moment jumps right over that logical hurdle and lands straight into the hearts of anyone watching.

The fact that this particular scene landed how it did with the Iron Man actor looks to have informed his performance in Avengers: Endgame, as the recent footage showing the moment where Tony reflects on Peter’s departure suggests that very possibility. Though if some of the theories that have come out in the past couple of rounds of speculation pan out, we just might find ourselves knocked out by Tony Stark’s fate in the long run.

Everything and nothing feels like a surprise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the choices made by the Russo Brothers and Kevin Feige fit into the Avengers storyline, while also throwing audiences for a loop. But when you can draw a reaction out of an actor like Robert Downey Jr. while watching those big choices unfold in a film like Avengers: Infinity War, you know you’ve done your job well.

Avengers: Endgame puts the Infinity Saga to bed, and probably revives Spider-Man in time for his sequel, on April 26th. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Far From Home takes off for adventure on July 5th. Should you want to see what else is in the works in the MCU, and whatever their release dates may be in the future, keep our Upcoming Marvel Movies guide in your bookmarks for further reference.

Mark Hamill Had The Best Response To Fake Star Wars Toy

Mark Hamill Had The Best Response To Fake Star Wars Toy
Mark Hamill Luke Skywalker Star Wars: The Force Awakens Lucasfilm

You gotta hand it to Mark Hamill when it comes to bad Star Wars puns. He keeps his dad joke A-game in peak condition -- see the Star Wars: Episode IX "trailer" he posted. But he didn't like that the joke was on Luke Skywalker with a Lego Star Wars toy featuring his missing hand.

Here's what Mark Hamill dubbed the #WorstToyEVER:

Of course he couldn't resist adding another hand pun with #LegoOfMyHand.

Plenty of people told Mark Hamill it wasn't a real toy -- apparently all you had to do was look up the Lego number -- but at least one fan disagreed that it was the worst toy. That fan was treated to a classic Star Wars reply from Luke himself:

See? Luke did listen to Obi-Wan on occasion.

A few fans replied with other fake Star Wars toys out there, and some of them are just so wonderfully wrong you have to wish Lucasfilm really did sell them:

I love this look at George Lucas and all of his money:

Star Wars fans would buy all of that, even just as gag gifts.

Mark Hamill does have a great sense of humor and heart about all things Star Wars. Without Carrie Fisher, and without Harrison Ford's Han Solo after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Hamill is pretty much carrying the entire old school load himself. He still has Anthony Daniels as C-3PO in Star Wars: Episode IX and he'll get an assist from Billy Dee Williams as Lando in the 2019 movie too. But we're all sad that Luke, Leia, and Han won't really get to be together on screen again.

J.J. Abrams is keeping a tight lock on Star Wars: Episode IX secrets, but that trailer is probably coming very soon. The film's title and trailer may even come our way as soon as this week through Star Wars Celebration 2019, which is being held April 11-15 in Chicago.

Star Wars: Episode IX opens in theaters December 20, 2019 as one of the many films worth keeping an eye on through our 2019 movie release date schedule.

Upcoming Disney Animated Movies: List Of Titles And Release Dates

Upcoming Disney Animated Movies: List Of Titles And Release Dates
Frozen 2

While Disney's live action films from Marvel and Lucasfilm might be the biggest players at the box office for the company, as Walt Disney said, it was all started by a mouse. Animation is still a big part of what Disney does, and Walt Disney Animation Studios continues to release massive hits one after another. It's like Marvel Studios, just a bit smaller. Whether it's Moana or the recent sequel to Wreck-It Ralph, animated Disney films are still incredibly popular. When put them together with the billion dollar success of films like Zootopia, the last few years have been incredible for Disney.

We can only imagine what they're going to do next. Well, in many cases we have to imagine what they're going to do next because we don't really know, details are still mostly under wraps.. Although, in other cases, we know exactly what they're planning.

Walt Disney Animation Studio, not to be confused with Pixar, has several films announced to be coming over the next few years. Most of them are still being kept secret, but we have a few hints about what might be coming, and then of course, there's the big movie that we know for sure is on the way. Here's all the details we have about what we know is coming, and what seems quite likely, in the future of Disney animation.

Frozen II

The only confirmed title from Walt Disney Animation Studios that we're waiting to see is a sequel to Disney's biggest animated hit, Frozen. In February of 2019 we finally got our first look at the project. The trailer is visually stunning, though it doesn't reveal a great deal about the plot of the movie itself. We see all of our heroes from the first film going on some sort of journey together. It also reveals a pair of brand new characters, though who they are, we still don't know.

Release Date: November 24, 2019

Unknown Lin-Manuel Miranda/Byron Howard Project

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the hardest working man in showbiz, has said that following his work on Moana, Disney Animation chief John Lassiter introduced him to Zootopia co-director Byron Howard so that the two could begin to collaborate on another animated film. As of this writing, Miranda says the two have yet to actually talk, so it's not even clear if there's even an idea they'll be working on or if they'll be starting from scratch. It's also possible that whatever the two work on will never actually see the light of day, but with talent like these two, we're betting that we'll see it eventually.

Release Date: Unknown

Zootopia Sequels

No sequels to Zootopia have ever been officially announced by Disney, but recently, Tom "Tiny" Lister, who had a small role in the original film, claimed that not one, but two sequels were being planned by the studio. It certainly wouldn't be shocking to learn this was true. Considering the the sequel to Wreck-It Ralph was rumored by the cast long before it was officially announced by Disney, it's certainly possible that's happened here as well. The original film made over $1 billion at the global box office and also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. That's a combination that practically demands a sequel.

Future Disney Animation Release Dates

November 25, 2020

November 24, 2021

November 23, 2022

Disney and the Thanksgiving weekend have been inseparable for a long time and with Disney's most recent update to its release schedule, it claimed that weekend for the next several years. While Frozen II decided to open a bit earlier, and now comes out the Friday before Thanksgiving, Disney now has the Wednesday before the holiday claimed for 2020 through 2022. No titles have been officially revealed, but the previously mentioned projects that are in some form of development could certainly be on that list.

Previously Released

Ralph Breaks The Internet

After years of rumor an official announcement via Facebook that Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 was on the way finally came. While that news wasn't exactly news, because John C. Reilly had already blabbed, what was news, and surprising news at that, was that Wreck-It Ralph 2 was actually going to be the next feature we saw from Disney following Moana. It took over a release date that was already set aside for another movie, putting it in what we'll call the Zootopia space in 2018. However, it was eventually pushed back into November

Release Date: November 21, 2018

Recently Cancelled Projects

Untitled Planes Sequel

Not every Disney project that gets announced actually makes it to the screen. Every once in a while the DisneyToon studio, which was promarily focused on television and direct-toDVD animation, was given a shot at a theatrical release. Such was the case with two previous Planes movies, which did pretty well all things considered. A third film in the series was announced and scheduled to be released in June of 2019, but in June of 2018 it was announced that DisneyToon studio was being completely closed down, and with it, the film was cancelled.

Gigantic

Originally planned to hit theaters in the Spring of 2018, Gigantic was going to be Disney's take on Jack and the Beanstalk. It kept getting pushed further down the release schedule, falling into the Thanksgiving weekend of 2020 slot eventually. However, in October of 2017, Disney announced that the project simply wasn't working, and had been cancelled. At that point Disney confirmed that another project that had been in the works would be taking that slot, but we still don't know what movie that is.

The future of Disney Animation may be largely secret, but you can be sure that with the success the studio has had in recent years, Disney has every intention of keeping that train moving. With the success of Ralph Breaks the Internet, and the presumed success of Frozen II, it seems likely that more theatrically released sequels to Walt Disney Animation Studios films are quite possible.

When it comes to original concepts, the sky is the limit in animation, so it's basically impossible to guess what could be coming next.
