Looks Like Bond 25’s Script Is Getting Help From Killing Eve’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Looks Like Bond 25’s Script Is Getting Help From Killing Eve’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag

Another chapter of the James Bond franchise is closing soon. Barring some last minute change, the still-to-be-titled Bond 25 will mark Daniel Craig’s last mission as 007, so it goes without saying that this movie will need to stand out and wrap things up with a bang. To improve the likelihood of that happening, Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been recruited to polish Bond 25’s script.

Last September, following the departure of director Danny Boyle and writer John Hodge from Bond 25, longtime James Bond franchise contributors Neal Purvis and Robert Wade were brought in to rework the upcoming movie’s script. However, when making a major motion picture, sometimes it becomes necessary for another writer or several to join the proceedings. Scott Z. Burns hopped aboard in February to work on the script, and now Phoebe Waller-Bridge is picking up where he left off.

According to The Observer, Daniel Craig specifically requested for Phoebe Waller-Bridge to bring “her wit and quirkiness” to the Bond 25 screenplay. Craig is reportedly a fan of the other TV series she created, Fleabag (which just concluded its second and final season in the U.K.), and felt that she could do a good job with livening up Bond 25.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has recently been in New York City performing a stage version of Fleabag, and while in the Big Apple, she met with Daniel Craig about polishing the Bond 25 script to add more humor and the kind of “offbeat style of writing” she’s known for. So while the story as a whole doesn’t sound like it’ll be overhauled, tonally Waller-Bridge will be making some adjustments.

This marks the second major cinematic franchise that Phoebe Waller-Bridge gets to contribute to. Last year, she appeared as L3-37, Lando Calrissian’s droid partner in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Waller-Bridge’s other notable credits include The Iron Lady, Goodbye Christoper Robin, Broadchurch and Crashing.

Phoebe-Waller Bridge working on Bond 25 is the latest step in this movie’s long journey to rolling cameras, but assuming the changes Phoebe Waller-Bridge are met with approval, then production should finally begin in a few weeks. Cary Fukanaga of True Detective and Maniac fame was brought in to take over as director from Danny Boyle, who exited the project due to creative differences.

Aside from Daniel Craig reprising James Bond for the fifth and final time, Bond 25 will also see the return of Lea Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann, Ben Whishaw’s Q, Naomie Harris’ Eve Moneypenney and Ralph Fiennes’ Garteth Mallory, who succeeded Judi Dench’s character as M. No new characters have been announced yet, although Rami Malek is being eyed to play the villain.

Originally set for release this November, Bond 25 was pushed back to February 2020 and is now scheduled to hit theaters on April 8, 2020. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress, and don’t forget to look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what’s headed to the silver screen a little sooner.

Bond 25 Just Dropped A Ton Of New Details But Left One Important Fact Out

Bond 25 Just Dropped A Ton Of New Details But Left One Important Fact Out
Spectre James Bond looking out into the audience with piercing blue eyes

After every current James Bond movie drops, there’s almost always talk about the next film. In those talks, the traditional nickname is basically something along the lines of Bond 25, which is the most recent sequel we’ve been looking forward to since 2015’s Spectre. Typically, this all leads up to the official reveal of the film’s name at a big press conference event. But while we got a nice live streaming reveal of the film’s cast this morning, we unfortunately don’t have that title yet! Still, let's go through the brand new details we do have.

While I thought we’d have an official title by this morning, we did get some substantial information, including a first look at the plot, in addition to those cast members, old and new, that were revealed this morning. And there are still some pretty big reveals to be had, even in the shadow of the missing title.

Announced at Ian Fleming’s Goldeneye villa in Jamaica, producer Barbara Broccoli sadly confirmed that there was no name for Bond 25 as of yet, though she did provide the following detail of how the film will open. That detail was also reflected in the official synopsis for the film, which is as follows:

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

So 007 is finally relaxing and taking life less seriously, presumably with Madeline Swann, the woman he fell head-over-heels for in Spectre. And not only has evil reared its head, it's a dire enough situation that only Felix Leiter is the best hope of bringing Bond back. Though if that sizzle reel of Craig’s tenure is any indication, extra motivation may be at hand as he just might be losing Madeline, completing the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service path that his last adventure started him out on. Cue the Bond theme, and our favorite super spy getting back into the game, for a hard-driven battle of revenge.

For Bond 25, that mysterious villain will take the form of Academy Award winner Rami Malek, who is finally confirmed as playing the still unnamed baddie. Malek was unable to attend this event, but provided a pre-recorded message in which he said the following:

[I'm not] jealous one bit that you're all in the absolutely stunning setting of Ian Fleming's iconic Caribbean home, Goldeneye, on the island of Jamaica. No, not at all. I'm stuck here in New York in production, but I'm very much looking forward to joining the whole cast and crew so very soon. I promise you all I will be making sure Mr. Bond does not have an easy ride of it, in this his 25th outing. I can't wait to see you all soon. Cheers.

In addition to Malek, the Bond 25 cast is also adding franchise newcomers Dali Benssalah, Ana De Armas, Lashana Lynch, David Dencik, and Billy Magnussen were all revealed as part of the roster that this new film is bringing into the field. Though there was also some surprising news dropped into the returning cast portion of the announcement.

While cast members Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Lea Seydoux, Rory Kinnear, and Ben Whishaw are all confirmed as Bond 25 players, a face we haven’t seen in some time has been brought back to the fold. The return of Jeffrey Wright’s Felix Leiter sees James Bond’s “brother from Langley” returning for the first time since 2009’s Quantum of Solace. This was previously speculated as a possibility, fueled by Wright himself, and it’s good to finally have confirmation that Felix Leiter will return for Bond 25.

All of these announcements were in service of the start of Bond 25’s principal production phase, which means that shooting is now underway in Jamaica, as we speak. Which is probably why, at the end of the livestream shared with the world this morning, we were treated to photos of a set that was constructed in the area.

If we were to venture a guess, the structure shown in the photo below is probably be the corner of the world that James and Madeline will call home at the beginning of Bond 25. But you can judge for yourself, as you take a look at that snapshot below:

It’s certainly been interesting to follow the path of Bond 25, as it originally started life as a project for director Danny Boyle, with a script from John Hodge in the works. Though eventually, Boyle dropped from the picture entirely over creative differences, leaving Joji Fukunaga to step into the director’s chair.

Because of said setbacks, as well as a couple rounds of rewrites ordered on Bond 25, production was delayed, pushing it out of the original November 8, 2019 slot it was supposed to debut in. With February 14, 2020 being the first replacement date, the final April 8, 2020 release date was settled upon, and now that production has started, we’re confident that’ll stick.

Which leads us to that big question: when in the world are we going to have a name for Bond 25? Usually, the big reveal press conference that the Bond franchise has famously been known for would give the public their first taste of what the film would be about, complete with a convenient name that doesn’t depend on a number.

But here we are, with the next Bond film in production and no title given. More than likely, that pesky script work has left the team without a convenient name for Bond 25. Whatever it is, I'd guess it will probably follow the same formula of a single word that keys everyone into the plot, while also being edgy.

Come to think of it, the recently dismissed title Shatterhand would be a nice fit, as it follows that criteria, and would make a great trilogy of S-sounding titles after Skyfall and Spectre. Also, with some parties convinced that this morning’s announcement should have included the rumored return of Christoph Waltz’s Ernst Stavro Blofeld, that title would be apt as it was one of his aliases during the Ian Fleming run of novels.

While that particular thought isn’t confirmed in any way, shape, or form, it feels like something that’d be a pretty amazing finale. One last showdown with a formidable foe would be a hell of an end for Daniel Craig to go out on, leaving a new actor able to step in fresh and clean.

You can watch the entire Bond 25 live streaming event below, to see the lovely splendor of Jamaica for yourself; as well as some of the stunning clip reel work the team for this event has put together.

Wherever the future of Bond 25 takes us from this point forward, it’s sure to be a mix of the respectable past and a bold way forward. We’ll have to wait a little longer to know what to call this film, but with the information we’ve gotten this morning, there’s enough of a tease to keep us waiting patiently.

Bond 25 will be released in theaters on April 8, 2020; outside of its usual November timeframe.

First IT Chapter Two Trailer Debuts The Adult Losers' Club

First IT Chapter Two Trailer Debuts The Adult Losers' Club

It's no secret that the horror genre has been in a renaissance during the last few years. Rather than stale franchises or torture porn, filmmakers have been bringing unique and terrifying new additions to theaters, and making a ton of money in the process. Andy Muschietti's IT was certainly no exception, as the iconic miniseries was adapted for the silver screen.

Given the first film's success, IT Chapter Two was an inevitability, and Andy Muschietti assembled a fantastic adult cast to continue the story in the sequel. Details about IT's follow-up has been kept under wraps, but now the first trailer has arrived. Check it out-- you'll float too.

Does anyone else have chills? Pennywise the dancing clown is back, and he might be even more menacing than the last time we saw him. This first trailer is largely focused on one terrifying sequence starring an adult Bev (Jessica Chastain), but we're also shown glimpses of the rest of the adult Losers' club, as well as the terrifying villain himself.

In the trailer, Beverly Marsh comes back to her childhood home, and the site her trauma as a girl in order to fulfill her oath with the rest of the Losers' Club. She's let in by a sweet old lady, and the two discuss the town of Derry, and Bev's return. But things start to take a turn quickly, the moment the little old lady mentions that her father used to be in the circus.

The scene plays out with tons of tension, and the audience is privy to more information that Jessica Chastain's character is. We watch in horror as she's talked by Pennywise's latest disguise, before eventually being attacked. Let's just hope that Bev gets out there alive.

Jessica Chastain is joined by a stunning cast of adult actors, who are shown in brief clips throughout the first IT Chapter Two trailer. James McAvoy is playing Losers' Club leader Bill Denbrough, who is shown sharing some tender moments with his childhood crush, Bev. Bill Hader is playing Richie Tozier, taking on the mantle from Stranger Things standout Finn Wolfhard. Also featured are Mike (Isaiah Mustafa ), Eddie (James Ransone), and Stan (Andy Bean).

Personally, I think this first IT Chapter Two trailer is super effective. By largely focusing on one sequence, the trailer fails to accidentally spoil the film's contents. And while the sequel's tone is made crystal clear, just about anything could happen when it arrives in theaters.

IT Chapter Two will arrive in theaters on September 6, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Ryan Reynolds Has A Perfect Mother's Day Message For Detective Pikachu Fans

Ryan Reynolds Has A Perfect Mother's Day Message For Detective Pikachu Fans

Mother’s Day weekend is here, and so is the highly-anticipated release Detective Pikachu! For those struggling to convince their moms to go out and see the popular (and adorable) video game character over other new releases such as The Hustle, Poms, or Tolkien, you’re in luck! Ryan Reynolds is covering all his bases during the promotion of his latest film, and has released a special message for moms everywhere. Take a look:

This has been a PSA! Ryan Reynolds took to his Instagram to share a very on-brand video concerning his own reputation as a foul-mouthed actor (most certainly from playing Deadpool) and placing concerns to rest for Detective Pikachu. As he cleverly explains, the yellow fluffy detective will not be washing his mouth with soap, because he’s a PG character!

Considering the actor has played one of the only R-rated Marvel superheroes on the big screen, moms may have received mixed messages about Ryan Reynolds’ involvement in the Pokémon franchise meaning he’d be placing an edgier take on this character too. The funny video assures audiences that the movie is a-ok for the entire family! It even features a cute exchange between Reynolds’ Pikachu and Justice Smith’s Tim that screams "heartwarming."

Detective Pikachu seems to prove that Ryan Reynolds is more than capable of using his dry humor to attract a younger audience as well … even if adult audiences have grown accustomed to his f-bombs and such. The movie does have a tricky line to walk between appeasing OG fans who are now adults and introducing kids to the new franchise as well.

Since the actor has been playing Deadpool for the past few years, he has admitted that turning the switch into PG content was a bit of a struggle. He recently told CinemaBlend that there could be an entire R-rated cut of Detective Pikachu with all the improv he got out in the outtakes. He’s also pitched a grittier Pikachu that’d be a remake of Mean Streets or Goodfellas as well.

So while a Ryan Reynolds-voiced R-rated Pikachu could certainly exist, the soft and fluffy handle-with-care Pokémon will be gracing screens this weekend. Per reviews of the film, Reynolds’ comedy holds up in his new voice role, some have even said it’s the best part of the movie amidst criticism of the film’s premise.

Whether mothers hear this message or not, Detective Pikachu is heading into an impressive opening weekend after topping the box office Friday with almost $21 million, becoming the first film to knock Avengers: Endgame to second place. The movie also already broke a record to become the best opening for a video game film.

Detective Pikachu is in theaters now! Line up with your moms this weekend!

J.J. Abrams Reflects On Surreal Challenge Of Figuring Out How To Use Real Footage Of Carrie Fisher

J.J. Abrams Reflects On Surreal Challenge Of Figuring Out How To Use Real Footage Of Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley in Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker

If you keep tabs on the highly secretive making of original Star Wars movies, you may already know that when Star Wars Episode IX – now illustriously titled Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker – hits theaters it will come with Carrie Fisher intact. It won’t be CGI the new film is using either.

Previously, Disney made the fanbase aware that the studio had enough unused footage from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens to bring Carrie Fisher back to the big screen in a very real and completely unfaked capacity. At Star Wars Celebration, director J.J. Abrams reflected on the surreal challenge of figuring out how to use the real footage. He said:

As I’ve said we couldn’t [fill the void left by Carrie.] Chris Terrio, the co-writer and Kathy [Kennedy]… as we all talked about how to move on. I mean she was the best. She was glorious. She was amazing. We all just loved her. I knew her from many years before as well. In Episode VII she was the greatest. It was impossible, no way, what are you going to do? You don’t recast that part or certainly have her disappear.

So, he went back to the drawing board. At the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in the Windy City, J.J. Abrams was on hand to explain how the conversations got started about Carrie Fisher and about how there was one singular moment when he and the creative team realized the “real” footage from the cutting room floor would and could work. He also said:

The weird moment of having had a number of scenes from Force Awakens that had gone unused. Looking at those scenes and starting to understand that there was actually a way to use those scenes to continue the story so that it would be her.

Still, when you look at the challenge of using footage that was for all intents and purposes recycled, it couldn't have been easy. J.J. Abrams also told the audience attending the Star Wars Episode IX panel at Celebration there was never any thought of bringing Carrie Fisher back with CGI, however.

The idea of having a CG character was off the table. We never even wanted to try. The idea of saying, ‘What if we could actually write scenes around her?’ So, it would be her performance—she’s the movie. The crazy thing is, when I say this, emotionally it’s every day it hits me that she’s not here. But it’s so surreal because we’re working with her still, if that makes sense. She’s so alive in scenes and the craziest part is how not crazy it feels.

The final result was an experience that was "sureal" for the producer, writer and director. After seeing stills and footage today, it's a little bit surreal for me too. We actually got a first good look at Carrie Fisher in the upcoming film during the panel, as well.

We’ve known for some time now there would be real footage of Carrie Fisher used in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. J.J. Abrams mentions footage from The Force Awakens. Previously, word on the street was the flick will also use some footage from Star Wars: The Last Jedi to flesh out additional scenes.

J.J. Abrams did mention that Carrie Fisher will get some scenes with her real-life daughter Billie Lourd, in the upcoming movie, calling the way that Princess Leia lives on “mind-blowing.” Even Mark Hamill has given his stamp of approval for Leia’s return, also noting she’d “get a real kick” out of the idea. He said:

I’m glad they found a way to do that, and something tells me that she’d get a real kick out of the fact that she had a hit movie years after she left us, because that was just her. I like to think that would please her, but nothing would be better than having her here.

Hopefully, her appearances will pan out in ways that will resonate with fans and fit suitably into the puzzle of this final movie that was 40+ years in the making. If you haven’t taken a look at the first teaser trailer for the movie, you can do so below.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker arrives in theaters on December 20, 2019. Take a look at what we know about the upcoming project or check out what else is heading into theaters this year.

Kevin Smith Was 'A Blubbering Mess' After Captain Marvel's Mallrats Scene

Kevin Smith Was 'A Blubbering Mess' After Captain Marvel's Mallrats Scene

Spoiler Warning: If you don't want to get spoiled on a very specific part of Captain Marvel, come back after you've seen the film!

It's a Marvel tradition to include a cameo from comics legend Stan Lee. As the first MCU film to feature a Stan Lee cameo after his passing, Captain Marvel's was bound to feel special and that turned out to be especially true for Kevin Smith. The cameo features Lee reading the script for Mallrats, Smith's film in which Lee makes an appearance. The cameo hit Smith like a ton of bricks, and he took to social media to share what a "blubbering mess" he was.

For a little extra context, Mallrats is Kevin Smith's second film. It premiered in 1995 and featured two slackers who spend all their time in a New Jersey mall and try to win back their girlfriends, who are fed up with their juvenile attitudes. One of the slackers (played by Jason Lee) is obsessed with comics and superhero genitalia. In probably the most memorable moment in the film, Stan Lee appeared as himself to give Lee's character some much needed wisdom on relationships.

In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee can be found reading the script for Mallrats on a train, rehearsing his lines under his breath. It's a super fun moment that works perfectly in the '90s set movie. The moment was bound to make some fans teary-eyed considering Lee passed away last year, but Kevin Smith might have had the most significant reaction.

The filmmaker took to Twitter to share his reaction to seeing his work referenced in a Marvel movie and by Stan Lee no less. Kevin Smith said that he was a "blubbering mess" with a photograph to prove it. The filmmaker also wrote that "after a lifetime spent referencing the movies, the movies just referenced me!" It's a pretty great way to have your work referenced and it no doubt means a lot to Smith.

Kevin Smith also asked, since he's now officially part of the MCU, did he survive Thanos' famous snap? Well, he's got a 50-50 shot at least!

Of course, this wasn't the only way that Marvel Studios paid homage to the co-creator of its iconic superheroes. The opening Marvel Studios logo replaced the Avengers with Stan Lee and all of his cameo appearances. It was the perfect way to respect Lee. The Marvel legend had filmed a few of his cameos before he passed, so we have at least one more to look forward to in Avengers: Endgame in a few short months.

You can catch Stan Lee and his wonderful cameo in Captain Marvel, which is out in theaters right now. For everything else in theaters, check out our 2019 movie release guide.

Letitia Wright Found Out About Shuri’s Infinity War Fate Just Like The Rest Of Us

Letitia Wright Found Out About Shuri’s Infinity War Fate Just Like The Rest Of Us
Shuri in Infinity War

It's a very exciting week for Marvel fans, as Avengers: Endgame is finally arriving in theaters. It's been a long year of waiting since Infinity War hit theaters, and shocked moviegoers by having Thanos win over the good guys. Audiences were left to watch in horror as countless characters faded to dust before our eyes, in a twist ending no one was expecting.

But there were a few characters whose fate was left vague, as they weren't seen being dusted in the Wakandan field. Chief among them is T'Challa's sister Shuri, playing by Letitia Wright. Shuri was confirmed to be dusted when Endgame's character posters hit the internet, leaving fans disappointed about the genius princess. It turns out that Wright found out about Shuri the same way, recently saying:

It was surprising. I saw everybody in the colored photos, you know the colored posters, and then I saw myself in grey. And I was like, 'I just died out of nowhere!' I think the whole of Twitter was pretty upset so I kind of logged off and didn't log back on. So I'm waiting to see how that came together and how that panned out tonight.

Same, Letitia Wright. Same.

Letitia Wright's comments to Marvel Entertainment come from the Avengers: Endgame purple carpet at last night's premiere. And they're likely going to surprise many fans, who thought that the actors at least knew whether they lived or died. But Wright was kept in the dark like everyone else, which just shows how tight security is at Marvel Studios. Especially when it comes to Endgame.

When we last saw Shuri, she was attempting to separate Vision's consciousness from the Mind Stone. She warned it wold be a long process, but the Black Order brought massive forces that eventually put Shuri in the fray. She briefly faced off against Corvus Glaive with her Gauntlets, before he and Vision came to blows and flew out the window. Letitia Wright's character wasn't seen again, and wasn't shown turning to dust alongside the rest of the Avengers and Guardians.

Related: Infinity War Theory Claims Shuri Might Have Saved Vision

The first Avengers: Endgame trailer showed Shuri among the fallen characters, but some fans thought this might be a red herring. The Russo Brothers have already admitted to putting fake footage into trailers, allowing moviegoers to be truly surprised by the film's contents. But once the movie's character posters arrived last month, Shuri's fate was sealed. She was one of the many characters to get a black and white poster, meaning she was dusted as a result of The Decimation

With both Shuri and T'Challa gone, Wakanda is without a ruler. What happened to the technologically advanced society after half the population vanished?

Answers will come when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, fill out CinemaBlend's Endgame death pool, and be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Watch Nicolas Cage Go Ham Recording His Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Role

Watch Nicolas Cage Go Ham Recording His Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Role

In recent years, Oscar winner Nicolas Cage has become best known for what we’ll call his engrossing and often over-the-top acting style. That meme-worthy charisma and recognizable voice made him ideally suited to playing Spider-Man Noir in Best Animated Feature Film winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In advance of the film’s upcoming home video release, a new featurette shows Nic Cage going ham recording his role as the hardened crime fighter. Check it out:

You have to love how self-aware Nicolas Cage is that upon getting notes during his first recording session. The veteran actor could sense that what the director really wanted was for him to let loose and go ham (not unlike his co-star Spider-Ham). With no need to hold back or be more reserved, the veteran actor went ‘Full Cage,’ and if Robert Downy Jr.'s character in Tropic Thunder were here, I imagine he would say "You always go Full Cage."

Going 'Full Cage' brought what the director wanted and audiences demand, delivering one of the film’s standout performances. Spider-Man Noir wasn’t exactly the kind of yelling and screaming Nicolas Cage that we saw in Face/Off or last year’s Mandy (solid 2018 for him), but that wasn’t what the role called for and he ‘brought the Cage’ in a different way, delivering some truly ridiculous and hilarious lines as the color blind crime fighter.

The actor, who is a noted comic book fan, totally gets what this hard-boiled Spidey is supposed to be, comparing him to the work of author Raymond Chandler, who wrote The Big Sleep and Farewell, My Lovely. Spider-Man Noir is the prototypical noir detective, he just also happens to be Spider-Man. Nicolas Cage also said that Spider-Man Noir is probably a fan of The Public Enemy actor James Cagney and Cage definitely seemed to be channeling Cagney in his performance.

Also, it must be mentioned that Nicolas Cage’s noir attire in this featurette with the fancy black jacket is a nice touch; call it method with style. If there is any justice in this world, in addition to the previously announced sequel and spinoff to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we’ll get another spinoff featuring Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir. He's just such a fun character and Nicolas Cage is so delightful in the role. There are limitless possibilities with the Spider-Verse and this one needs to be realized.

Fans can relive all the inter-dimensional hijinks and adventures when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD on March 19. The film is already available on Digital HD.

Toy Story 4’s Forky Almost Had An Even Funnier Name

Toy Story 4’s Forky Almost Had An Even Funnier Name
Forky in Toy Story 4

Disney has produced tons of iconic animated blockbusters, but there is one property that's never been far from theaters: Toy Story. Starting back in 1995, Andy's group of toys have consistently made moviegoers laugh and cry. Toy Story 3 was especially tear-inducing, but it seems like the Disney/Pixar will outdo itself with the highly anticipated fourth movie.

Toy Story 4 will arrive in theaters in a month and change, and the generations of fans are eager to catch back up with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the group. But in addition to catching up with the toys and Bonnie, audiences will also be introduced to some new characters. Chief among them is Tony Hale's Forky, a spork brought to life by Bonnie's creativity. Director Josh Cooley recently shared the hilarious origin story of the character's name, saying:

Well, you know, we were coming up with a bunch of different names for him, and I showed a picture of him to my son. I think he was probably four at the time, and I go, ‘Hey buddy, what do you think the name of this character is?’ He looks at it and he goes, 'Hmm, Fork Face.' And I’m like, ‘That’s hilarious. We cannot use it.’ But the fact that he’s around the same age as Bonnie and didn’t know what a spork was, I thought, ‘That feels real to me.’ So Forky felt like a kid would name him that.

Yeah, this is a solid story. Some moviegoers may have FOMO that the name Fork Face wasn't chosen, but it's not exactly the family friendly title that Disney is known for.

Josh Cooley's comments to Collider show how organically the character of Forky came about, and how it was influenced by actual kids. Cooley wanted to make sure Toy Story 4's upcoming addition would come from a place of childlike wonder, so he went straight to source when trying to nail down a name for that character. And that's exactly how Forky came out.

Related: Could We See A Toy Story 5?

It's fun to see exactly why Josh Cooley didn't name Tony Hale's character Sporky, considering what he's made out of. The name Sporky seems arguably more appropriate, but the Toy Story 4 director realized that a 4 year-old girl probably wouldn't know that word yet. And Fork Face was out of the running for obvious reasons. So Forky was born, and will no doubt be stealing the show once the third sequel finally arrives in theaters.

Forky is going to be a macguffin for Woody's adventure in Toy Story 4, as trying to rescue him will eventually find the sheriff reunited with Bo Peep. And with Veep and Arrested Development favorite Tony Hale voicing him, smart money says Forky will be a serious scene stealer in Toy Story 4.

Toy Story 4 will finally arrive in theaters on June 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Captain Marvel's Stan Lee Tribute Is Perfect

Captain Marvel's Stan Lee Tribute Is Perfect
Stan Lee in Iron Man

The following contains minor spoilers for Captain Marvel**.**

When we lost Stan Lee at the end of last year, Marvel fans were in shock. when it wasn't necessarily an unexpected turn of events, the man who helped bring so many of our favorite heroes to life was loved by many who never met him that everybody felt it. Since then, we've seen tributes to Lee included in Once Upon a Deadpool and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but the one included in this week's Captain Marvel may be the best of them all. It doesn't wait until the credits roll where some might not see it. It drops it right into the opening seconds of the movie, by making Stan Lee the focal point of the Marvel Studios logo.

If you've seen any Marvel movie you're familiar with the Marvel Studios logo that plays either at the very beginning of every film, or after a short cold open. The current version of the logo is a collage of brief clips of various MCU films showing off all our favorite heroes in action. We see Captain America and Iron Man and Black Widow and the Hulk all looking awesome while the camera pulls back to reveal the Marvel Studios logo.

The one in front of Captain Marvel, however, is slightly different. It functions exactly the same way, only instead of seeing our favorite Marvel heroes, we get clips of Stan Lee in all of his various MCU cameos that he's made over the years. We don't see any other characters. No Iron Man. No Thor. It's just Stan. All Stan. As the logo fades away a text briefly flashes on the screen to say thank you to Stan Lee, then our movie gets underway.

It's an incredibly lovely way to say goodbye, one that touched the entire audience at my screening. The audience erupted in cheers and applause as soon as everybody realized what we were seeing. It was glorious. There may have been tears. From other people, I mean.

Of course, that wasn't the only time we saw Stan Lee in Captain Marvel's run time. Lee filmed his requisite cameo for the film before he died. It comes fairly early in the film. Vers (Brie Larson) has chased a Skrull onto a city bus and she's trying to figure out which of the humans on the bus is now the hiding Skrull. One of the people on the bus is Stan Lee.

Interestingly, unlike most of Stan's cameos, where he's playing a random nameless character, in this cameo he's actually playing Stan Lee. We see Stan on the bus reading a movie script and trying to learn his lines. Specifically, he's reading the script to Kevin Smith's 1995 comedy Mallrats. Yes, Stan Lee's cameo makes reference to another Stan Lee cameo.

We understand that Stan Lee filmed his cameo for Avengers: Endgame as well, so we'll likely see him again at least one more time. As it's only a couple months from now, maybe Stan Lee will be in the Marvel logo again then. It will be fitting to be sure Stan Lee gets a proper thank you during the film the entire MCU has being building towards. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing that again.

Captain Marvel in her movie

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

It's been over a month since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and the public is still reeling from the dizzying narrative that The Russo Brothers crafted. And with the spoiler-ban long since lifted, collaborators from the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be more chatty about the movie's contents, revealing how the superheroic sausage gets made.

Endgame and Infinity War were filmed back to back, and with Captain Marvel set to arrive in the interim between releases. The latter movie was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and they recently revealed to CinemaBlend how they collaborated on The Russo Brothers' pair of Avengers flicks, saying:

Ryan Fleck: Yeah, sure. Just to clarify, we were actually shooting simultaneously. They shared the script with us, we shared ours with them, and we each gave each other feedback on them, so it was a very fluid approach to the character. You want to add to that, Anna?

Anna Boden: They did shoot with her before and after she shot with us. But, you know, it was a really nice introduction into that world because the Russo brothers have been working with Marvel for so many years, and had already made a couple of our favorite Marvel films at that point. And we were on set with Brie for her first day of shooting in Atlanta. We saw the first time that she tried on that Captain Marvel costume. It was really exciting and just feeling the energy of bringing this new, really important character into that world, and getting a sense of where she was going to go and how important she was going to be before making our film was really, really amazing.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, and the Captain Marvel co-directors' comments to CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg prove just that. While the script for Infinity War and Endgame were kept largely under wraps, there was still room for collaboration with directors in the franchise.

Captain Marvel's long-awaited adaptation into live-action came about during a fascinating time in the MCU. Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and The Wasp were released after Avengers: Infinity War, helping to move the story forward and satiate the fans after Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life. Brie Larson was cast years earlier, and all eyes were on what Carol Danvers would do with her super powerful abilities.

Brie Larson's role in Endgame was also fascinating because she had to play the role prior to actually filming Captain Marvel. The Oscar-winning actress jumped feet first into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it turns out that the co-directors of the origin movie were cued in to her role in the massive ensemble project. That's how you do serialized storytelling, folks.

Captain Marvel had a fairly limited role in Avengers: Endgame, as The Russo Brothers primarily focused on the original six team members. But she was a macguffin for some of the biggest moments in the blockbuster, starting off by saving Tony Stark and Nebula from certain death in the void of space.

She was noticeably absent from the Time Heist, with a bit of exposition revealing Carol Danvers was policing the galaxy during the fallout of Thanos' snap. But she came back during the knick of time during the final epic battle in the ruins of the Avengers compound. Captain Marvel singlehandedly destroyed Thanos ship, and engaged the Mad Titan directly. She was also in the all-female moment, which caused applause during countless screenings.

It should be interesting to see how Captain Marvel factors into Phase Four. She should be in direct communication with the Avengers, and a sequel seems inevitable. The audience also hasn't been privy to how her conflict with the Supreme Intelligence went down, or where the Skrulls ended up taking up residence. And Brie Larson is hoping Ms. Marvel might be introduced in a future installment as well.

There’s One More DC Character The Suicide Squad Needs To Bring Back

There’s One More DC Character The Suicide Squad Needs To Bring Back
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad

Although Warner Bros isn’t as focused on interconnectivity between all its DC movies as it once was, the DC Extended Universe continuity isn’t going anywhere. As such, the claims that The Suicide Squad will be a total reboot have been greatly exaggerated, and it will indeed serve as a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. That said, it’s been made abundantly clear over the last couple of months that under writer/director James Gunn’s supervision, The Suicide Squad is more of a relaunch than a direct follow-up, and will feature a lot of new characters. It makes sense to have a mostly new cast if you’re wanting to distance an adventure from its predecessor, though The Suicide Squad would still be wise to bring back Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller to round out its collection of familiar faces.

Thus far, only three characters from the last Suicide Squad movie are confirmed to be returning from the sequel, and one of them isn’t even being reprised by the same actor. Idris Elba is taking over Deadshot duties from Will Smith due to the Aladdin star having scheduling issues, and Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney will reprise Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively. It makes sense why these three are being brought back for The Suicide Squad, as Deadshot and Captain Boomerang have on the team since it was revitalized in the late 1980s by writer John Ostrander, and Harley Quinn has been one of the most prominent members ever since The New 52 reboot in 2011.

From there, it’s easy enough to look at the various Suicide Squad iterations over the decades and find other members to fill out the ranks, from villains like Count Vertigo and Blockbuster to heroes like Vixen and Oracle. You can even find a solider to fill in for Rick Flag and make sure the Squad doesn’t get out of hand during field missions. But when it comes to actually putting the officially-named Task Force X together and supervising them from off-site as they carry out their objective, there’s no one better for the job than Amanda Waller.

Just like Deadshot and Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller has been a part of the modern Suicide Squad mythos (not to be confused with the Silver Age Suicide Squad, which was a team of adventurers that only appeared in six issues of The Brave and the Bold) since the beginning. She may not have superpowers or a colorful costume, but make no mistake, Amanda is one of the most formidable and dangerous individuals in the DC universe. She’ll use intimidation, manipulation, blackmail and whatever other tools are at her disposal to ensure that her goals are carried out, which are usually on behalf of national security. The ends always justify the means in her book, even if it results in casualties. It’s no wonder then why she’s the person who’s putting a group of criminals together to carry out covert black ops missions for the U.S. government. She doesn’t care how many of them die in order to complete the mission and she won’t hesitate to detonate the nano-bombs in their necks.

Although Angela Basset first brought Amanda Waller to life on the big screen in Green Lantern, it wasn’t until Viola Davis played the character five years later that we saw her connected to the Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad movie certainly wasn’t a critical hit, but Davis was one of its few highlights, nailing her blunt and sinister personality excellently, arguably demonstrated best when she shot those FBI agents without batting an eye (as seen below). The DC Comics universe vast, and looking at just the Suicide Squad corner of it, it’d be easy enough to find someone to replace fill Amanda’s role as the government figure feeding the team orders. But if The Suicide Squad is willing to bring back three lead characters from the last movie who are figureheads for the property as a whole, then Amanda needs to be included in that small group.

I understand James Gunn wanting to fill out these this new Suicide Squad team with mostly new faces. It helps with wiping the slate clean and mostly separating this Suicide Squad movie from its predecessor, not to mention that possibility all of these new characters could be killed off during the course of the story. After all, while there are various characters who have repeatedly served on [Task Force X](https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/TaskForceX(NewEarth) in the comics, there’s been no shortage of recruits who have died after just one or a couple missions. Behind the scenes, though, Amanda Waller has almost always been the woman in charge, and narratively speaking, there’s no reason to change that. Even if this were a total reboot filled with all new actors, I’d still advocate for Amanda to appear. A Suicide Squad without her would be like a Batman movie without Alfred or a Superman movie without Lois Lane.

Since Suicide Squad’s release, Viola Davis’ filmography has grown with Fences and Widows, both of which received positive critical reception. She’s also still leading the ABC series How to Get Away with Murder. It’s possible that her shooting schedule for the TV show might prevent her from appearing in The Suicide Squad, as production is reportedly beginning this fall. If that’s the case, while it’d be disappointing not to have Davis around, the backup plan would be to recast the character, as has been done with Deadshot. That’s how important Amanda is to the Suicide Squad. It’s not absolutely crucial for Rick Flag, Katana, Killer Croc or even a resurrected Diablo to return for The Suicide Squad, but without Amanda alongside Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, it feels like there’s a piece of the puzzle missing. Davis getting to play the character once more would be the icing on the cake, so hopefully an arrangement can be worked out.

The Suicide Squad charges into theaters on August 6, 2021, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates on how it’s coming along. Don’t forget to look through our DC movies guide to learn what else is in development for the DCEU.

Avengers: Endgame Spoilers Ahead

It's been weeks since Avengers: Endgame hit theaters, and the conversation surrounding the blockbuster is showing no signs of slowing. With the spoiler ban lifted, the cast and crew have been able to reveal more details, and answer lingering questions left after the film concluded. Endgame also marked Stan Lee's final cameo in the MCU, due to his death in November of 2018.

Stan Lee's Avengers: Endgame cameo doesn't disappoint, but unfortunately it doesn't look like the comic book icon got to see it before his passing. Kevin Feige recently broke the news that Lee didn't get to see Endgame, saying:

Stan loved to wait to see the final movie at the premiere, so unfortunately he did not get to see the finished movie. Stan got a download of the full story the day he came and shot his cameo.

What a bummer. But while Stan Lee didn't get to watch the epic and complex narrative of Avengers: Endgame before passing away, he was at least cued into movie's contents. And his final cameo is definitely one for the record books.

Kevin Feige's reveal about Stan Lee came from the Marvel Studio Head's recent Reddit AMA. Feige answered a variety of questions concerning the Marvel Cinematic Universe-- both its past and future. When asked if Lee got a chance to check out an early screener of Avengers: Endgame before his death, Feige revealed that the comic book legend preferred seeing them on the big screen.

It's that same childlike wonder that is what makes Stan Lee such a legend, and why his creations were able to transcend pop culture. And considering how visually stunning Avengers: Endgame was, it deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Especially the absolutely behemoth final battle at the Avengers Compound, which saw the dusted characters and countless characters engage Thanos' army. The visual effects are stunning, with a ton of action and characters to follow in every frame. It's only a shame that Stan Lee wasn't able to enjoy every payoff and applause-inducing moment.

Stan Lee appeared in Avengers: Endgame in the film's second act, during the super ambitious Time Heist sequence. After accidentally allowing Loki to escape with the Space Stone, Cap and Tony traveled back to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in 1970. As the exterior of the facility is set up, we see a car driving by with the license plate "excelsior". Lee is behind the wheel, telling the government agency to make love, not war.

It's hard to imagine the Marvel Cinematic Universe without Stan Lee, especially his iconic cameos. But his vision continues to live in the blood of the massive franchise, which is showing no signs of slowing down.

You can catch Stan Lee in Avengers: Endgame, which is ramping up for yet another weekend at the box office. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Captain Marvel Box Office: This Went Pretty Well, Huh?

Captain Marvel Box Office: This Went Pretty Well, Huh?
Captain Marvel Box Office March 8-10, 2019

Leading into Captain Marvel's debut box office weekend, there was an unusual amount of uncertainty, at least for a Marvel movie. There were plenty of early reports about the presales being among the MCU's best, but all of that positivity was counterbalanced by very vocal frustrations from a portion of Internet users who downvoted the film and complained about it a lot on message boards. Well, the proof is in the final results, and it seems a hell of a lot of people wanted to see the finished product for themselves.

When the money is finished being counted, it looks like Captain Marvel is going to end up in the $153,000,000 range, which is a very good (although not great) performance for a recent Marvel movie. It will also probably be enough to make 10X its nearest competitor, How To Train Your Dragon 3, which feels like it might be some kind record. I don't have any real data on that though. So, if you wanna tell your friends that maybe fact, don't involve me. Regardless, you can check out the full box office table below as per Box Office Mojo...

Obviously the real story here is Captain Marvel. $153,000,000 is a monster opening weekend, and everyone involved should be pleased with these results. Expecting a much bigger number than this would be the equivalent of expecting a movie to have one of the biggest opening weekends ever. Those expectations simply are not fair or realistic, even with a family that had as big of a budget as Captain Marvel. So, this is definitely a win. Hard stop.

That being said, it's still worth comparing Captain Marvel's results to other recent MCU movies, and analyzing that is a little more complicated. These figures are not finalized, but based on where the other films ended up, Carol Danvers and company are going to finish in either 7th or 8th place for MCU opening weekends. That puts its behind the 3 Avengers movies, behind Captain America: Civil War which was basically an Avengers movie, behind Black Panther and Iron Man 3 and very close to Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. That's really solid, and it clearly differentiates itself from franchises like Ant-Man that are on that second tier. Given these numbers and the critical (80% RT) and social media responses which have been reasonably positive, though, it's fair to say there is less buzz and perhaps less long-term potential here than with Black Panther, which opened to over $200,000,000 and 97% positive reviews.

Beyond Captain Marvel, there's not a whole lot worth talking about here. The LEGO Movie 2 still not breaking one hundred million at the domestic box office has to be considered a disappointment. It's also seeming increasingly likely that How To Train Your Dragon 3 will finish its domestic run with the lowest grosses of the entire franchise. As such, it's probably a good thing it's coming to an end.

Next week we'll get a look at Captive State, Wonder Park and Five Feet Apart, though the real story will probably be how well Captain Marvel holds. Ultimately, that percentage will likely be the strongest indicator as to how profitable the new MCU entry will prove to be.

Angelina Jolie Gets Threatening In First Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil Trailer

Angelina Jolie Gets Threatening In First Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil Trailer

Robert Stromberg's Maleficent was a massive hit when it hit theaters back in the summer of 2014, ultimately making over $750 million at the global box office - but it took a minute for a sequel to get the green light. While Disney continued to mine their expansive animated library for new live-action material, the idea of a sequel to the villain-centric fairy tale stayed on the back burner. Five years later, however, the studio is now finally getting ready to unleash Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil on the world, and today we got our very first look at the new blockbuster. Check it out!

The first Maleficent surprised a lot of people in the way in which it added new context to the primary antagonist of 1959's Sleeping Beauty, giving audiences an interesting opportunity to see the villainess in a new light. Taking that into consideration, it will be interesting to see what the sequel winds up doing with her, as this debut trailer for Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil definitely suggests that the film will be developing the character's sinister side quite a bit.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, who previously worked with Disney co-directing 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the Maleficent sequel picks up years after the events of its predecessor, and continues to explore the complicated maternal relationship between Angelina Jolie's titular character and the princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), whom the eponymous fairy memorably cursed on the day of her birth. The new movie features a number of actors who were featured in the original, including Imelda Staunton as Knotgrass, Juno Temple as Thistlewit, Lesley Manville as Flittle, and Sam Riley as Diaval, but there are also a number of new faces joining the franchise, including Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Harris Dickinson - who replaces Brenton Thwaites in the role of Prince Phillip.

Though production on Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil wrapped up last August, we initially thought that we were going to have to still wait quite a while for the release of this movie... but that all changed back in March in a significant way. While Disney had initially featured the film on their release schedule for May of 2020, apparently some significant moves were made behind the scenes that allowed them to push it up nearly a full year on the calendar. Now the blockbuster sequel is scheduled to arrive in a theater near you this October - meaning that it will be one of four different live-action adaptations of classic Walt Disney Animation features released in 2019 (the other three being Dumbo, The Lion King, and Aladdin). It will have some pretty stiff competition at the box office, with other releases that month including Joker, Zombieland: Double Tap, Gemini Man, and the animated Addams Family, but the studio clearly doesn't want to make fans of the original wait any longer than they have to for the anticipated sequel.

Sad News, Aunt May Turned To Dust From Thanos’ Infinity War Snap

Sad News, Aunt May Turned To Dust From Thanos’ Infinity War Snap
Marisa Tomei as Aunt May in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Just your friendly neighborhood writer giving you the heads up that there are SPOILERS ahead for Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame may have offered the universe some much-needed avenging, but there’s still a lot to be addressed about what’s next for many of the MCU's characters after the snap. When things pick up next with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home, we’ll learn more about the fallout of Thanos’ Infinity War with the Avengers, including the new dynamic between the dusted and the those who have lived five years without them.

According to a recent Fandango interview with Far From Home director Jon Watts, we have some clarity about the fate of Aunt May prior to the upcoming Spidey film. Here’s what he said:

She disappeared and came back.

It looks like Marisa Tomei’s May suffered the same fate as her nephew. Strangely enough, this is probably preferable to if she’d survived, because she would then be mourning Peter following the previous death of Uncle Ben if she had. How heartbreaking! Directors Joe and Anthony Russo said in an interview last year that she had survived, but during the making of Far From Home, things changed.

Jon Watts also teased how the Spider-Man movie will tie into Endgame with these words:

So many things happened in Endgame, but you don't see any of the fallout. So I used Peter Parker/Spider-Man as an opportunity to get that ground-level perspective to show you what it would look like if all these crazy things had happened. What would day-to-day life be? If you were snapped away, you’d have to work backwards and retake your midterms.

The biggest way Endgame shifts the Spider-Man sequel is he’ll be going to high school in a world where half of his past classmates now have an age gap with him, and Watts has confirmed that Far From Home will definitely be addressing this. Looking at this through the world of Peter Parker’s story arc is a great choice to because he’s the most ground-level hero dealing with everyday life as a student in NYC.

Jon Watts said Far From Home will pick up almost immediately after Endgame and deal with the implications of the Infinity Saga culmination. In addition to Peter and May, it looks like Ned, Michelle Jones, Flash Thompson and Betty Brant were victims of the snap as well since they don’t look like they got older and will be going on a class trip to Europe.

Additionally, it looks like Peter will be dealing with the death of his mentor Tony Stark and a new exciting addition to the MCU: the multiverse. According to the recent trailer, one of the Infinity Stones-powered snaps ripped a hole in the universe, bringing in a much nicer Mysterio than comic book fans remember, as well as the Elementals. The film will wrap up Phase 3 when it hits theaters on July 2.

New Avengers: Endgame Clip Reveals Another Dusted Character

New Avengers: Endgame Clip Reveals Another Dusted Character
Captain Marvel looking at the fallen

We’re almost a year removed from Avengers: Infinity War and like the Avengers themselves, we are still tallying the losses from The Decimation wrought by Thanos. Thanks to the posters for Avengers: Endgame, we recently learned that Shuri is indeed among the fallen, and the Avengers will not be able to rely on her brilliance for the war to come. Now a new clip for the upcoming film has revealed that another character, one we haven’t seen in a while, was dusted: Stellan Skarsgård’s Dr. Erik Selvig. Take a look:

We’ve seen a bunch of shots like this in the marketing for Avengers: Endgame, where the various surviving heroes look at images of all the missing and dead friends and teammates who fell during Infinity War. As you can see on the left of this screenshot, the new clip from Avengers: Endgame shows that Dr. Erik Selvig, the astrophysicist from the Thor films, has also been reduced to dust.

We last saw Dr. Selvig in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he was one of the team members working at the new Avengers facility in Upstate New York. There he, along with his team of scientists, was presumably working to help the Avengers and the world protect itself against new threats. As Captain Marvel is being shown in the screenshot above and we now see, his mind and knowledge will not be on available to aid the Avengers this time around.

It’s been so long since we’ve seen him that you might have forgotten about Dr. Selvig, but the revelation of his dusting just reminds us that he was a part of this world and the scope of what Thanos did. All the characters we’ve met over the years of the MCU that were still alive at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War were subject to the indiscriminate culling of The Decimation.

With all that said, here’s where things get interesting. We thought Dr. Erik Selvig was alive. The human trio of the first Thor film, Stellan Skarsgård’s Dr. Selvig, Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, all seemed to have survived the snap because they all appear in the novel Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath.

That book by Brandon T. Snider is about the aftermath of The Decimation. In it, Dr. Selvig and Darcy set out to find and understand the cause of the devastation and in their quest they are aided by Jane Foster. The three are dubbed the “Science Avengers.” So, how can Dr. Selvig be dead in this clip from Avengers: Endgame if he is one of the main characters in an entire book set after Avengers: Infinity War?

One possibility is that Dr. Selvig is only presumed dead. I’m sure with over 3 billion people snapped out of existence at once, it would take a while to know for sure who is and isn’t still alive. We’ve also seen the Avengers looking at an image of Scott Lang in these kinds of scenes in the trailers so they can be wrong. Of course, he was in the Quantum Realm.

We also know that Marvel is totally willing to add footage and change things and design the trailers to throw us off so that we don’t know too much when we see the film. That could be a possibility here, but that effort for a character we haven’t seen in an entire Phase would seem unnecessary.

I don’t know that we’ll get a firm answer that clears up this disparity, but if I were to guess, I would say that sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. This is just a book and I don’t think Marvel is super concerned about the canonical complications from it. The movies are what takes precedence and are the official canon. We see this in Star Wars too, where the books are supposed to be canon, but their level of tie-in with the new films has amounted to a few Easter eggs at best.

So I think we can probably count Dr. Selvig among those hoping for an undusting until we hear otherwise. You can check out the new clip with Dr. Selvig’s digital headstone in the video below.
